ETOS is a Congressionally-mandated study of air quality issues
affecting eastern Tennessee and Great Smoky Mountains National
Park. Ozone exceedances are becoming more frequent, and are
affecting the region as a whole. The Congressional sponsors
of the work have been requesting a public meeting to examine
ETOS results so far, consider related scientific efforts,
and plan for future work. The 2006 East Tennessee Ozone Study
(ETOS) Science Workshop will be held on May 17-18, 2006 at
the Pollard Technological Conference Center in Oak Ridge,
TN. The sponsor of this workshop is the National Oceanic &
Atmospheric Administration Air Resources Laboratory Atmospheric
Turbulence and Diffusion Division (NOAA/ARL/ATDD). The workshop
will bring together federal and state researchers, academicians,
policymakers, and students to actively discuss the current
state of atmospheric science and policy in the East Tennessee
region, highlight atmospheric research conducted by local
scientists, and communicate ideas for future investigative
studies. More specifically, the workshop will provide a forum
for regional stakeholders to showcase current air quality
endeavors and foster partnerships for future work. Field studies
and modeling work performed by ETOS researchers will be highlighted
during the Workshop.

The detailed program agenda is available here.
The text of selected remarks (PDF) and the workshop technical
presentations (PPS) are available here.

Both oral and poster presentations are being solicited for
Workshop technical sessions. Presentations should focus on
topics germane to atmospheric research and policy in the East
Tennessee region. Each oral presentation will be scheduled
for 10 minutes followed by a short question-and-answer period.
Poster presenters are expected to be in attendance for the
entire poster session. Oral presenters are asked to provide
a copy of their presentation in electronic format (i.e. MS
Office PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat) to conference support staff
prior to their session. Please bring the presentation on one
of the following media: 3.5 floppy disk, CD, USB storage
device, or ZIP Disk. All prospective oral and poster presenters
must submit a short plain-text abstract (< 250 words) utilizing
the designated space on the Workshop Registration Form. Please
do not submit any figures, tables, or pictures with the abstract
text.

The application period for student travel awards is closed.
Graduate students interested in regional air quality in East
Tennessee are encouraged to attend the Workshop. A limited
number of student travel awards were available for eligible
students that exhibit poster presentations. Applicants must
fulfill all of the following criteria to be eligible.
- Current enrollment as a graduate student
- Submittal of a completed Student
Travel Award Form
- Agreement to participate in the Workshop poster session
in its entirety
**Adobe Reader 7.0® must be installed to download, complete,
and submit the Student Travel Award Form. To download the
latest version of Adobe Reader®, please visit http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.html
There is a designated space on the Student Travel Award Form
for applicants to cut and paste a plain text abstract. Successful
applicants will be notified by e-mail. If a graduate student
wishes to attend the ETOS Workshop and not apply for a student
travel award (i.e. not exhibit a poster presentation), please
submit the registration form under Workshop Registration only.
If you have
difficulties submitting the registration form on-line, please
fill out the form and fax it to Gabrielle Ridenour at 865-576-1327.
